What this device is actually good for, and when something else is worth a look.

This bundle only earns its keep if you already have — or are about to install — a PV system; without one, the Controller only contributes dynamic load balancing. The 11 kW variant natively plugs into a red CEE 16 A socket: no adapter raises it past 11 kW, because the charger itself caps current at 16 A. Have a stronger three-phase supply? The 22 kW bundle with the same Controller gives a higher power ceiling for a similar price. Adapters to weaker sockets than the native CEE plug are not included — they are bought separately. An electrician has to mount the Controller (ideally at the distribution board), route the current transformers to the main supply lines, and connect it to the network — via Ethernet or WiFi 2.4 GHz — plus add an external Type A RCD and upstream breaker, since the charger's DC module (6 mA DC / 20 mA AC) does not replace them. It is not suited to billing between tenants or a fleet — the meter has no MID certification. It does work with any PV inverter and AC-coupled battery storage, though, since it only measures the building's draw rather than talking to the solar installation directly.

What exactly does the Controller add over the standalone Gemini flex charger?

On its own, the Gemini flex charger only has built-in static load balancing. The bundled Controller adds dynamic load balancing and solar-surplus charging — it measures the building's draw with 6 current transformers and routes PV surplus to the charger, with no direct communication to the inverter.

What do I need at home for PV-surplus charging to actually work?

A PV system with any inverter (the Controller does not talk to it directly, it just measures the building's draw), room at or next to the distribution board to mount the Controller and its current transformers, and a network — Ethernet or WiFi 2.4 GHz — linking the Controller to the charger. An electrician handles the installation.

Does this work without an internet connection?

Partly. The Controller exchanges data with the charger locally, so dynamic load balancing works without the cloud. But the Gemini flex charger's own documentation notes that connecting to the Controller for PV-surplus charging needs the charger's own internet connection — so in practice, internet-connected networking is part of the requirement.

Why is this bundle 11 kW and not 22 kW — can I change that later?
