The Tesla Model Y is the car that currently defines Elon Musk's market strategy. Yet the world seems to be rubbing its eyes in disbelief as it watches the billionaire's latest moves.

We sit in the front row, watching the richest man on the planet stage pyromaniacal games on the foundations of his own power. Elon Musk, who single-handedly pulled the Tesla Model Y and other electric cars out of the dark ages of golf carts, has decided to slaughter innocents.

Officially: Tesla is no longer a car company. Unofficially: Musk has a new set of toys – humanoid Optimus robots and the Grok chatbot, which costs billions and has a peculiar sense of humour.

Elon Musk behaves like a mad chef who, halfway through preparing a delicious steak, suddenly decides that from today the restaurant serves only digital oxygen and robotic hugs. It is a boldness that will either make him a god, or leave him with a garage full of expensive toys nobody wants to buy.

The effect of this U-turn? The pride of Texas saw profits plunge by 46 percent year on year. In a traditional business ecosystem ruled by Excel and hard facts, the board would already be looking for cardboard boxes for their belongings.

But not for a brand whose pillar is the Tesla Model Y. Musk, like a Roman emperor, thumbs down the icons that built his empire. The verdict has fallen on the Model S and Model X.

Those two cars were for the electric world what Concorde was for aviation – proof that the limits of physics are only a suggestion. They proved that a "little battery" can humiliate a combustion V8 at the lights, while offering space for seven people and doors that open towards the sky.

Now those symbols of luxury are fading into obscurity. Musk needs production capacity and capital to build robots that, in his vision, will walk the dog and do the shopping for us.

Imagine Ferrari suddenly stopping production of 12-cylinder supercars because it decided the future lies in autonomous coffee machines. This is not just a strategy shift; it is a slap in the face for technology enthusiasts.

Tesla was loved as a no-compromise driving machine – something the Tesla Model Y unquestionably is. It is hard to accept a promise of a future full of metal puppets at the cost of automotive legends.

The Polish market and the Tesla Model Y

Kia EV6 Long Range77.4 kWh168 kW (228 HP)~410 km241,900 PLN

While Musk plays at being a god of artificial intelligence, a brutal fight for the customer is underway in Poland. A Pole – a practical creature who counts every zloty – is increasingly glancing towards China, leafing through more than one catalogue of zero-emission vehicles.

Brands such as BYD and MG have stopped being exotic curiosities. They have become a real alternative, offering leather upholstery where the Tesla Model Y provides ecological plastic.

Tesla, however, has no intention of giving up and deploys its favourite weapon: the price guillotine. It reacts predictably – it cuts margins so aggressively that European competitors start nervously browsing job ads in the cycling industry.

With 166,240 PLN in your pocket, you can become the owner of a rear-wheel-drive Tesla Model Y. For that sum, traditional manufacturers will give you at most a crossover with a one-litre engine that sounds like a dying blender when overtaking.

And here? You get a piece of engineering that, despite the "Juniper" facelift, makes driving simpler than operating a toaster. It is a smartphone on wheels – you can hate it for lacking a soul, but it works with surgical precision.

The Model 3 Long Range Premium RWD at 186,240 PLN, meanwhile, is the market equivalent of finding a gold bar in a packet of crisps. A theoretical range of 750 kilometres means your patience for motorway rest areas will run out before the energy in the battery, which any fast charger can replenish.

Tesla Model Y performance and specifications

For those who think speed is more important than common sense, the 2026 Tesla Model Y Performance is on offer at 269,990 PLN. With 460 horsepower, the sprint to 100 km/h takes 3.5 seconds.

That is a pace at which the eyeballs want to swap places with the back of the head. But the sprint is not the point. The most important news is that Tesla has finally listened to drivers who own hands.

Physical turn signal stalks have returned to the interior! In 2026, the height of modernity is the reinstatement of something invented more than a hundred years ago.

For years Elon insisted that buttons on the steering wheel were the future. Anyone who has tried to signal an exit from a roundabout on a rainy evening, twisting the Tesla Model Y steering wheel, knows it was as comfortable as an appendectomy performed with a shoehorn.

The return of the stalks is a quiet admission of error, although Musk would probably call it a "re-implementation of the analogue haptic interface". Under the skin, plenty is also happening – the new LG5M battery promises better thermal resistance.

The charging curve is meant to be as smooth as a plastic surgeon's forehead after the holiday season. That means the Tesla Model Y will accept high power for longer, shortening Supercharger stops to a minimum.

The problem is that Tesla is no longer the sole apex predator. Sales statistics at the beginning of 2026 show that in many segments BYD is overtaking it, while the breath of BMW and Volkswagen – who have finally learned to produce competent software that works with any modern charger – is on its heels.

Twilight of the gods and dawn of the machines

Tesla in 2026 is a company torn in two. With one hand it builds arguably the most efficient electric cars in the world at prices that infuriate the competition.

With the other, Musk is trying to build an army of robots that nobody needs at the moment. The killing off of the S and X models is a symbolic end of an era, which makes the Tesla Model Y the most important point in the line-up.

Tesla wants to become the Microsoft of motoring – an operating system for your life, delivered in a tin can on wheels. Is it worth buying one of their cars now? Definitely yes.

At current prices, the Tesla Model Y is the deal of the decade. Despite its flaws, it is a complete transport tool that beats combustion competitors on running costs – as confirmed by every specialist industry catalogue.

Buy these cars while they still have steering wheels. Before Elon decides that human driving is too primitive and replaces the entire interface with an AI chatbot.

The American dream of a machine called the Tesla Model Y continues, but it carries the flavour of unsettling science fiction. The driver becomes a redundant add-on to software in which the battery and the charger play the key role.

Investing in this model today is a choice between motoring pragmatism and a vision that does not always account for the needs of a traditional driver.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

Does the Tesla Model Y at 166,240 PLN come with a heat pump as standard?

Yes, every Tesla Model Y, including the latest 2026 variants, comes with an advanced fifth-generation heat pump as standard. The system uses waste heat from the drivetrain and battery to heat the cabin, which drastically limits winter range loss. In Polish conditions this preserves around 15-20% more range at temperatures close to zero.

What are the real differences in the new LG5M battery used in the Model Y?

The LG5M battery uses NMC cells with higher energy density and an optimised cathode composition. The key change is the improved DC charging curve – the car can now sustain power above 150 kW up to 55% state of charge (SoC). This cuts the stop time at fast chargers by nearly 8-10 minutes over a 10-80% cycle.

What does removing the Model S and Model X from the line-up mean for current owners?

Discontinuation of production does not mean the end of support. Tesla guarantees the availability of spare parts for at least 10 years from the end of production. For owners, this means a faster decline in market value, but the models may become "technology classics" thanks to unique features such as the Falcon Doors. Software support will continue within the shared Ryzen processor architecture.

Why does the Model 3 Long Range RWD have a longer range than the AWD version?

It is a question of mass and losses. The RWD version is around 100-120 kg lighter thanks to the absence of the front motor and inverter. The lower mass and the lack of mechanical drag from the second motor translate into lower energy consumption of about 1.5-2 kWh per 100 km. Combined with the large battery, this allows a record range of 750 km.

Can physical turn signal stalks be retrofitted to older models?

Officially, Tesla does not offer a retrofit kit for cars produced without stalks. Replacing the steering column would require deep changes to the wiring harness and the body control software. Third-party solutions may void the warranty on the electrical system. Choosing a 2026 model solves the problem at the factory.

What about battery degradation with frequent Supercharger use?

Modern packs are managed by a BMS system that actively conditions cell temperature before charging. Regular Supercharger use causes only around 1-2% additional degradation after 200,000 km compared with AC charging. The key is the systematic limiting of power above 80% capacity, which protects the chemical durability of the cells.
