ABB Terra 184 DC charging station

PLN 348,632.43

The ABB Terra 184 DC is the most powerful freestanding DC fast-charging station in the fourth-generation Terra family, alongside the Terra 94 and Terra 124. In mode 1 it delivers up to 180 kW on a single outlet; in mode 2 it charges two cars at once, splitting power into 2 x 90 kW (power sharing). The station combines CCS2 and CHAdeMO connectors in one cabinet, covering a wide range of high-voltage battery packs. Power comes from a 3-phase 400 V AC supply, with a maximum input current of 280 A; DC output current reaches 200 A (300 A optional with a cooled cable). The steel cabinet is rated IP54, weighs 395 kg and measures 565 x 880 x 1900 mm (W x D x H), which calls for a solid foundation. Connectivity is via a 3G/4G modem and 10/100 Base-T Ethernet, and the station supports OCPP 1.6 for integration with an operator's management system (CPMS). Authorization is by RFID card; an MID-certified energy meter can optionally be fitted at the factory or in the field, required in some markets (e.g. Germany). A built-in residual-current device protects the AC input circuit.

Independent opinion

The EV Compass opinion

What this device is actually good for, and when something else is worth a look.

The Terra 184 is an investment for a high-traffic public charging operator, a fleet or a commercial site — not for a single household. The site needs a 3-phase 400 V AC connection rated for at least 280 A, plus room for a foundation under the 395 kg freestanding cabinet, which measures 565 x 880 x 1900 mm — clearance around the unit is needed for the IP54 cabinet's cooling airflow. Grid connection, foundation work and the electrical installation are the job of a qualified installer authorized to work on high-voltage, high-current systems — delivery and commissioning need to be planned with the local grid operator well in advance, given the scale of the connection. The station runs unattended, communicating over a 3G/4G modem or Ethernet with an operator's management system (CPMS) via OCPP 1.6, which lets sessions be monitored and billed remotely. If the local market requires MID-compliant billing (e.g. Germany), a certified DC meter needs to be ordered from the factory or added in the field. An optional cooled cable raises the maximum DC output current to 300 A for cars that support it.

Strengths

  • Up to 180 kW on one outlet, or 2 x 90 kW when charging two cars at once (power sharing) — the highest throughput in the ABB Terra family, for a high-traffic public station or a fleet.
  • Two standards in one station: CCS2 and CHAdeMO — serves almost every EV on the market, including older non-European models.
  • An IP54 cabinet for unattended outdoor use, with 3G/4G and Ethernet connectivity plus OCPP 1.6 for integration with a management system (CPMS).
  • An optional MID-certified meter (factory- or field-installed) supports energy billing in markets that require it, such as Germany.
  • An optional cooled cable raises the maximum DC output current to 300 A, shortening charge times for cars that support high power.
  • A built-in residual-current device on the AC input circuit adds a layer of protection without having to size an external RCD.

Better served by another model

  • When a site has no need for DC charging at all — an office car park with long dwell times, for instance — a much cheaper AC station with a simpler grid connection, such as the Enelion Vertica Pro, is enough.

  • When the grid connection can't support the 280 A input current the Terra 184 needs, the smaller Terra 124 from the same ABB family needs noticeably less connected power.

  • For a single company-fleet bay with no ambition to be a public station, the wall-mounted Delta DC Wallbox is a far lower entry cost than the freestanding Terra 184.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

How many cars can the station charge at the same time?

The Terra 184 offers two user-selectable modes: in mode 1, one car charges at up to 180 kW, while in mode 2 two cars charge at the same time, each at up to 90 kW (power sharing across both outlets).

What charging connectors does the Terra 184 have?

The station combines a CCS2 connector and a CHAdeMO connector in one cabinet, so it serves both Combo 2 cars and older CHAdeMO-standard vehicles.

What grid connection does the station require?

The Terra 184 runs on a 3-phase 400 V AC supply, with a maximum input current of 280 A — a connection well beyond a home installation, typical of a commercial site or public station.

Does the station have an MID-compliant meter?

An MID-compliant DC meter is optional — it can be ordered from the factory or fitted in the field after the station is installed; in some markets, such as Germany, it is required.

What management system does the station integrate with?

The station communicates over a 3G/4G modem or 10/100 Base-T Ethernet and supports OCPP 1.6, letting it connect to a charging network operator's management system (CPMS).

How much does the station weigh, and does it need a foundation?

The freestanding cabinet weighs 395 kg and measures 565 x 880 x 1900 mm, so it needs a foundation built to the manufacturer's specification, not just a hardened surface.

How does the Terra 184 differ from the Terra 124 in the same ABB family?

The Terra 184 offers higher peak power (up to 180 kW in single-outlet mode, up to 90 kW per outlet in power-sharing mode) and needs a stronger grid connection (280 A) than the smaller Terra 124 in the same family.
