Electric beasts on the road

Kenworth and Peterbilt decided to do something that until recently seemed about as likely as aliens stopping by for lunch – they introduced new medium-duty electric trucks to the market. These electric vehicles are built on the ePowertrain platform from PACCAR.

Kenworth: T280E, T380E and T480E

Kenworth is launching the T280E, T380E and T480E – the first conventional medium-range electric trucks in North America. Orders are already open in the U.S. and Canada, with production starting in 2026. These trucks deliver between 170 kW and 350 kW of power. Maximum torque ranges from 1,100 to 1,850 lb-ft. Batteries? Two options are available: 250 kWh and 375 kWh, with ranges of up to 200 and 280 miles. All of this is charged in about an hour.

The T280E is a Class 6 truck with a 26,000 lb GVWR. The T380E, available as a Class 7/8 truck or tractor, offers up to 280 miles of range. And for those who need something more hardcore – the Class 8 T480E with a 200-mile range.

PACCAR is also introducing a central eMotor, which means there is no need to worry about wheelbase constraints. Inside the cab there is a 15-inch display along with EV-specific elements.

Peterbilt: 536EV, 537EV and 548EV models

Peterbilt did not want to be left behind and introduced the 536EV, 537EV and 548EV models. The Class 6/7 models – the 536EV and 537EV – are ideal for regional deliveries. And the Class 8 model, the 548EV, is a true beast for heavy-duty tasks.

Batteries with ranges of up to 280 miles and fast charging to 80% in just over 80 minutes. It is like a quick espresso for your truck!

All models use the PACCAR ePowertrain, delivering an impressive 605 hp and 1,850 lb-ft of torque. Inside you will find a 15-inch display and the SmartLINQ system.

"Optimization for medium-duty tasks is incredible, offering zero emissions. It is as if someone handed you the keys to the future," says Erik Johnson of Peterbilt.

In short, Kenworth and Peterbilt are entering the electric truck market. Fantastic. Well, if you are ready for the electric revolution and have 4-5 years to spare. But who would mind, right?
